Women of the Movement reintroduces Mamie Till Mobley to American audiences and brings them closer to her personal struggle for justice for her son Emmett in an exclusive clip to Shadow and Act.
The clip showcases executive producer/showrunner Marissa Jo Cerar and stars Adrienne Warren, Ray Fisher, Glynn Turman and others as they talk about Till Mobley’s impact on the civil rights movement, especially with her decision to let her son have an open casket funeral, showing the world how racism brutalizes Black people.
Warren plays Till Mobley as she endures the worst pain imaginable for a mother and how she utilizes that pain to bring the international eye to America’s failures regarding racism and violence. As ABC states, Till Mobley “risks her life to find justice after her son Emmett is brutally murdered in the Jim Crow South. Unwilling to let Emmett’s murder disappear from the headlines, Mamie chooses to bear her pain on the world stage, emerging as an activist for justice and igniting the Civil Rights movement as we know it today.”
Along with Cerar, the series is executive produced by Jay Z, Jay Brown, and Tyran “Ty Ty” Smith for Roc Nation, Will Smith and James Lassiter for Overbrook Productions, Rosanna Grace for Serendipity Group Inc., Alex Foster and John Powers Middleton for Middleton Media Group, Mazo Partners’ David Clark and Gina Prince-Bythewood, who directs the first episode. Cerar writes the first episode.
Women of the Movement will debut Jan. 6 on ABC.
