Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is the latest to join the cast of HBO’s Watchmen.
His casting, along with that of Sara Vickers, was announced Friday, June 29.
From Damon Lindelof, the dark DC Comics superhero title is led by Regina King and also stars Jeremy Irons, Louis Gossett Jr., Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Adelaide Clemens and Andrew Howard.
As with all characters so far, specific details have not been announced.
Lindelof’s version is “set in an alternate history where ‘superheroes’ are treated as outlaws. Watchmen embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel while attempting to break ground of its own.”
On Tuesday, May 22, Lindelof posted a letter to fans about the upcoming adaptation, which read in part, “Some of the characters will be unknown. New faces. New masks to cover them. We also intend to revisit the past century of Costumed Adventuring through a surprising yet familiar set of eyes…and it is here we will be taking our greatest risks.”
This is Mateen’s second role in a DC Comics work, as he plays Black Manta in the upcoming Aquaman film.
