Major spoilers for the third season of Netflix’s You below:
The colorful and vain inhabitants of Madre Linda occupy the third season of Netflix’s You alongside lead characters Joe and Love. While the kill count (at the hands of Joe and Love) is high this season, crucial supporting characters make it out alive.
Ahead of the season premiere, Shadow and Act spoke with series stars Victoria Pedretti, Penn Badgley, Tati Gabrielle, Shalita Grant and Travis Van Winkle — and the latter two broke down the season…specifically their fate at the end.
At the end of the season, Grant’s Sherry and Van Winkle’s Cary end up escaping, and in true Cary and Sherry fashion, they’ve monetized their brief imprisonment by the Quinn-Goldbergs.
Grant hilariously admitted to us that as a fan of the show, she was ready to have a gruesome fate before finding out that Sherry makes it to the end.
She said, “As a fan of the show before I got on it and I was ready to die…I was really ready to die [laughs]. Sera [Gamble, You showrunner] was like, ‘No, sweetie, you’re going to live.’ So with that information, I really went into the series and the playing of the series, like asking the why. Why does this couple survive? And what I learned was that this couple, that perfect facade, is actually the truth of Sherry and Cary, they are just perfect and they really do love each other, and it’s not their fault that they see every opportunity to thrive.”
Van Winkle talked about the fifth episode which takes Cary and Joe into the wilderness.
“I love episode five,” he said. “That’s one of my favorite episodes because we get to go into the woods and just let it loose. And I think learned a lot from playing Cary. Cary is really focused, he’s all about his nutrition and his health, he’s all about helping people, he’s all about self-improvement. And so for me, it was really easy to sink my teeth into that world. And I already lived my life in a very similar way, but what Cary taught me, I got a nutritionist and a trainer and I put on 10 pounds of muscle for this role. And I had to train like an Olympic athlete to get there, and within that structure, I found so much freedom. I was so happy with the focus, I set the course and I didn’t veer from it and I found myself happier and just more in touch with myself in nature.”
He also credited the cast, including Badgley, Pedretti and especially Grant, for influencing him in the role — which he says allowed him to connect to himself more.
“I feel like Cary really did connect me to myself a lot more. And what I love about my relationship with Joe [and] with Penn is I see this repressed man that has lost touch with his masculinity and his voice and his essence. And I’ve got my methods to break that out of them and to reconnect them to himself, but little do I know, he already has his own methods for that and that’s usually killing people. For me, it was really fun to play in that world. And when it comes to what am I taking away from this as an actor, I got to work with Shalita, a Tony-nominated actress. Also, Penn is just like uber talented and same with Victoria, but I’ll just stick with Shalita here…Shalita, she comes full on. She is on from the second she starts and I think because she elevates material so much, it only asks me to do the same. Shalita’s got that focus and I will take that with me.”
