Say it ain’t so! Syfy’s Z Nation, starring Kellita Smith as ex-National Guard Lt. Roberta Warren, has been cancelled after five seasons.
Producer David Michael Latt released a Periscope video Friday night announcing the cancellation.
“We wanted to tell you face to face…that we were not renewed for Season 6. We’re stopping at Season 5. We’re very sad, but we’re also really grateful with the opportunities that we had on the show,” he said.
Latt also said that the cancellation “is not the end of anything.” Instead, he said that this “is just the beginning of a lot of things.”

One of those things might be the Z Nation spinoff that was announced this July. According to SyFy via The Hollywood Reporter, the spinoff, Black Summer, will follow Jamie King as a mother looking for her daughter during the zombie outbreak. The eight-episode miniseries will premiere on Netflix.
It’s sad to hear about Z Nation‘s cancellation, since Smith was one of the few Black women holding it down in genre television. Smith talked about her role in sci-fi with Shadow and Act this September.
“I’m so grateful Black actresses are being represented in more TV and film roles, and that more roles are available. It’s overdue, and I hope to see even more Black representation in sci-fi. I also feel like there are women already in the sci-fi world that are being overlooked,” she said. “…Thanks to shows like Z Nation and The Walking Dead, there will begin to be better known Black faces in the sci-fi universe.”
