Zendaya has been set to topline an upcoming HBO drama pilot, Euphoria.
The potential series is an adaptation of the an Israeli TV series of the same name which is “Kids meets Trainspotting.”
11 other cast members were announced, including A Wrinkle in Time star Storm Reid, Brian “Astro” Bradley, Nika King, Maude Apatow, Angus Cloud, Eric Dane, Alexa Demie, Jacob Elordi, Barbie Ferreira, Hunter Schafer and Sydney Sweeney.
HBO first announced the project in March, described as a teen drama and a story of “drugs, sex, identity, trauma, social media, love and friendship.” The story is told by a lying, drug-addicted 17-year-old named Rue (Zendaya).
A24 is producing.
This is the first major post-Disney Channel television role for Zendaya, who starred in the network’s Shake It Up and K.C. Undercover from 2010-2018. She has a burgeoning film career, starring in last year’s hits, Spider-Man: Homecoming and The Greatest Showman. She has several upcoming films set, including a Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel, A White Lie (she produces with Reese Witherspoon) and Finest Kind with Jake Gyllenhaal.
This is also the first major television role for Reid, the breakout lead of Disney’s sci-fi epic, A Wrinkle in Time. She’s also appeared in J.D. Dillard’s Sleight.
Astro, who was a contestant on the U.S. version of The X Factor, is a rapper and was a series regular on the short-lived Red Band Society.
