Shanghai-based Fundamental Films has tapped Zoe Saldana to star in the financing and production company’s action-thriller “Hummingbird,” scripted by John McClain, which will be directed by Swedish directing team of Markus Kryler and Fredrik Akerstrom.

The story follows a black-ops assassin whose latest mark forces her to question the truth of her identity, and ultimately confront the unsettling fact that she’s more than a hired gun, she’s an entirely new breed of weapon.

Word on the street is that the project might also be the launch of a potential franchise.

Fundamental Films will fully finance and produce the movie alongside Broken Road Productions.

In addition to starring, Saldana will also executive produce through her production company Cinestar Pictures, which she co-founded with her sisters Cisely and Mariel.

No ETA at this time.

Saldana, repped by CAA, most recently appeared in Ben Affleck’s “Live by Night” and will next be seen in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.”
