The whole world was lighting incense and craving grits thanks to Erykah Badu and Jill Scott’s Verzuz session.
The neo-soul icons logged onto Instagram for what was supposed to be a battle of hits. Instead, it was an intimate kickback between two girlfriends and over 700K viewers. Badu and Scott came out the gate with The Roots’ “You Got Me,” a song special to both singers. The song was written by Scott, but Badu was tapped to sing the commercial version because Scott was unknown at the time.
Badu played the version with her vocals while Scott played a live version she performed with The Roots in 1999. Jilly from Philly revealed the song was the first one she ever wrote. Badu also spilled her own tea when she shared her debut single “On & On” was created to keep Mary J. Blige on her toes.
Another highlight came when Badu’s phone died while she was playing “Tyrone” and Scott responded by playing the song her damn self.
It was three hours of sisterhood and great music, but don’t take our word for it. Check out some of our favorite reactions from Twitter.
No single pen should have all that power.
Imagine "You Got Me" being the first song you ever wrote.

Rona couldn't stop the vibes.
I'm going to say this. The last 8, 9 weeks have been a LOT to say the least.
I don't think I've felt as relaxed and as at peace as I felt listening to Jill Scott and Erykah Badu talk about their contributions to the world.

Jilly is fine as frog hair.
Jill Scott managed to look amazing not just on video but also in every single one of the thousands of screengrabs from last night. How is that possible? Who does that?

The party don't start till Michelle walks in...
I lived long enough to see Michelle Obama pop up in an internet battle between Erykah Badu and Jill Scott. That’s wild. Blessed and highly favored, I am.
