Singer-songwriter Erica Campbell has been a staple since the ‘90s when she and her sister Tina, as the award-winning duo Mary Mary, became widely known for their contributions to contemporary gospel music with such hits as “Shackles” and “God in Me.” Since then, Campbell has accumulated immense success in the music industry and has even added actress, author and radio personality to her list of professional titles.
As she continues to release solo music and work on the various aspects of her career, the veteran artist is letting fans in more than ever with an episode of TV One’s Uncensored. She’s also preparing, alongside her sister, to take part in an Easter Verzuz against BeBe & Cece Winans. And this is all while her new single “Positive” lights up the charts.
Sitting in the hot seat is nothing new for the singer.
TV One’s Uncensored is known for getting celebrities to sit in the proverbial hot seat and spill little-known details about their lives, but Campbell said that many aspects of her life are already out in the open.
“It’s already spilled,” Campbell told Blavity. “It’s maybe some insight that people didn’t already know, but I spent my life out front, so I thought that it would be cool to give some truth or some insight to the hows and whys of Erica.”
While she couldn’t reveal too much about the episode, she confirmed that some of her life’s obstacles are discussed in the episode, including learning to face herself.
“Once I get past me, then it’s all success from there because I’ve learned to trust my voice and feel comfortable with my voice and embrace who God has made me to be and it allows me a freedom that I don’t mind sharing with other people,” she said.
Campbell addressed being criticized for being "too sexy."
In Dec. 2013, Campbell posted a photo of herself in a form-fitting white dress with a caption that announced her Grammy nomination on Instagram. She later received backlash from people referring to the look as “too sexy,” among other words. She recently revisited the conversation on the Frequently Asked Questions podcast, saying that “Christianity has a problem with sexuality,” but she told Blavity that the Christian community doesn’t solely own this issue.
“I don’t think it’s just Christians, because the Christians weren’t the only people who were on my pages saying stuff,” the acclaimed gospel star told Blavity. “I think we like to tag the believers. There’s a certain amount of modesty that comes with being a believer. I can’t blame you if you were raised a certain way and I don’t think you should blame me.”
She understands that being in the spotlight won’t always bring about positive responses.
“It comes with the territory,” she said. “It’s still kind of crazy to me. I still don’t get it, because those same people will watch every female rapper, R&B singer, and love them, but when it’s me, it’s a little bit different, so it is what it is.”
She praised her relationship with her sister Tina.
Throughout the years, Campbell has spent a significant amount of time with her sister Tina.
“Me and Tina together are undeniable – just what we bring, how we write, also how we fight,” Campbell said. “You know, we fight and we get over it. Some people stay mad forever. I just couldn’t do that.”
Campbell said their mother made them hug things out as children.
“Your house is the first place you learn how to deal with conflict,” she said. “Your house is the first place you learn how to deal with disappointment. When you learn that type of stuff you become very flexible in life. You can sit down and have conversations with people, you can embrace people in all of their differences and still have a great relationship.”
The Verzuz battle is already sold out.
Mary Mary will face off with storied gospel sibling duo BeBe and CeCe Winans on Easter in a monumental Verzuz battle. The live event is sold out, but like other Verzuz programs, it will stream on the Triller, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
“It’s gonna be so good – oh my God!” Campbell said.
While the Winans were indeed early influences for Mary Mary, Campbell said she isn’t worried about the competition. She’s actually excited about the opportunity and is looking forward to singing along during the event.
“Because we’re friends the level of competition is going to be a little different because we know it’s real love there,” she said. “I’m going to be singing all their songs because I’m a fan.”
The two sets of siblings have a working history together as well. They’ve toured together and watched each other perform from behind the curtains, and even joined each other on stage.
“It’s going to be a lot like that [tour] – a whole lot of love, a little competition, but more inspiration and motivation than your heart can handle on an [Easter] night,” she said. “You can’t lose – we all singing about Jesus.”
We can expect new music this fall.
Campbell released her latest single “Positive” in March to rave reviews and chart-topping stats, but that’s all fans will get for some time. She said she’s taking her time to create the perfect album. The album is set to be released in September, but until then, fans may get a few more singles and videos.
“I gotta get it right – you can’t rush a cake out the oven,” the award-winning singer said. “You can’t rush greatness, so I gotta take my time and make sure everything is together.”
Campbell knows a thing or two about creating a great album. Between her work in Mary Mary and her solo projects, she’s been the recipient of a bevy of awards and chart-topping success. Her debut album Help won her the 2015 Grammy Award for Best Gospel Album and eight Stellar Awards.
“I’ve never taken an L,” Campbell said. “I’ve never had a song that didn’t win something. Even my record that they claimed wasn’t the best record still sold over 500,000.”
The singer is balancing wearing multiple hats.
The multi-hyphenate artist wears many hats, including wife, mother and minister among several other duties that come along with it all.
“There’s so much going on in my life – my daughter’s graduating high school and then she’s off to Spelman, and we’ve got a new church, my son is starting to play in an orchestra, and my daughter’s running track, so there’s a lot going on in my life,” she said.
While time management is a very important aspect of maintaining her life, she is clear that she doesn’t do everything all at once.
“I don’t have to do it all on the same day at the same time,” she said. “I wear a bunch of hats, but I don’t have to wear them all at the same time. I’d look crazy.”
But one of those hats won’t be singing another genre and it certainly won’t be venturing too far from music.
“I’m winning in gospel, why would I go anywhere else? I was born to do this. I didn’t pick music, music picked me. Music picked me and I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world. Even when I was doing hair, I was only doing hair to finance the dream of singing and doing music. It’s all I’ve ever wanted to do!”
