Naya Rivera’s family has settled a wrongful death lawsuit filed against Ventura County, California, nearly two years after the actor’s tragic passing.

According to online records acquired by E! News, the settlement was filed on Feb. 24. Following the settlement’s submission, a hearing was scheduled for March 16. In a statement to the outlet, counsel for Rivera’s estate and her 6-year-old son, Josey Dorsey, stated that “all parties have entered into a global settlement, which is subject to approval by the Ventura Superior Court.”

Rivera’s ex-husband and Dorsey’s father, Ryan Dorsey, sued Ventura County’s Parks and Recreation Management and United Water Conversation District for wrongful death and negligent infliction of emotional distress in Nov. 2020, People reports. The lawsuit alleges that the actor’s death was preventable and the pontoon boat she rented from Lake Piru “did not have the proper features and equipment necessary to comply with U.S. Coast Guard safety standards,” according to People.

The statement reads that “through this settlement, Josey will receive just compensation for having to endure the drowning of his beloved mother at Lake Piru. Though the tragic loss of Josey’s mother can never truly be overcome, we are very pleased that the monetary settlement will significantly assist Josey with his life beyond this tragedy.”

As Blavity previously reported, Rivera’s body was found in Lake Piru on July 13, 2020, less than a week after the actor was reported missing. Authorities found Dorsey, who was 4 years old at the time, asleep on the boat the pair had rented a few hours prior.

“I can’t make any sense of what happened,” Ventura County Deputy Chris Dyer told NBC 7 after discovering Dorsey. “We just know that we found a 4-year-old on a boat, and he said that his mother never got back in.”

Hollywood and fans of Rivera were shocked at the news of her passing. The actor’s costars over the years took to social media to share their anguish, as well as their prayers for the Rivera family.

“Rest sweet, Naya. What a force you were. Love and peace to your family,” Jane Lynch, who portrayed Sue Sylvester on Glee, wrote on Twitter. “Prayers up for the lovely Naya Rivera,” wrote Jackeé Harry, who starred alongside the late actor in The Royal Family.

The Rivera family and loved ones continue to honor Rivera’s memory. Last December, Glee alums reunited for the second annual Snixxmas Charity Drive. The fundraiser raised over $117,000 dollars for Alexandria House, a transitional home providing safe and supportive housing for women and children in the process of moving from emergency shelters to permanent housing, Variety reports. Rivera enjoyed volunteering at the facility with her son and was passionate about Alexandria House’s work.
