Fantasia is going to college decades after she dropped out of high school at age 14.

According to Atlanta Black Star, the singer and The Color Purple actress announced her decision to go to college on Instagram Live.

She said her Sigma Gamma Rho sorority sister (whom she identified as “Yvonne” in the video) inspired her to take this next step. She added that the two “push each other” since Yvonne is also back in college. Fantasia has also posted in her Stories about juggling her time between filming The Color Purple and taking her classes. In a recent Story, she wrote about her dedication to finishing her homework despite being on set.

Fantasia’s educational journey has involved reclaiming her confidence in the learning space. She has been open that although she didn’t drop out of high school due to learning issues, she had poor reading and writing skills, according to Today. Atlanta Black Star also reported that in her 2006 biopic, Life Is Not a Fairytale: The Fantasia Barrino Story, she initially thought she wouldn’t need school because of her ambition to become a singing star. However, she earned her GED in 2009 from Andrews High School in Greensboro, North Carolina, where she grew up. She said she wanted to be a role model for her children and other young fans.

“I have a lot of young people who look up to me, like my 15-year-old brother and 7-year-old daughter,” she said then, according to Atlanta Black Star; Fantasia has since birthed two more children. “It’s something that I really need to do and that I want to do.”

With her daughter now college-age, Fantasia is setting yet another example about the importance of higher learning by attending college and reclaiming her time.

In a recent Twitter post, she wrote, “This current chapter of my life is called: MY TURN and I’m unapologetic about it!!”
