Earlier this year, First Lady Michelle Obama visited girls in Morocco and Liberia in her continued fight for girls’ education in developing countries. Tonight at 9 p.m., a film about that trip and Obama’s efforts to educate young women will premiere on CNN International in honor of International Day of the Girl (It will premiere on CNN US tomorrow, Oct. 12).

The film, titled We Will Rise: Michelle Obama’s Mission to Educate Girls Around the World, chronicles the lives of some of the girls Obama visited during her trip to Morocco and Liberia. On the trip, Obama was accompanied by her two daughters, Sasha and Malia, and actor-activists Meryl Streep and Freida Pinto.

In an op-ed posted on CNN, Obama talked about the resiliency of the brave young women she met during her trip.

“They get up before dawn, and spend hours harvesting crops, cooking for their families and tending to their younger siblings before heading to class,” she wrote. “After school, they work as maids and in factories, and they study for hours late into the night.”

In many developing nations, going to school as a girl is dangerous, as we’ve seen in the case of Malala Yousafzai. Michelle Obama’s involvement in this fight is all the more important because of this danger, and her efforts are making waves.
