“When we meet Gamora (Zoe Saldana), she’s a bad guy working with Ronan and Nebula (Karen Gillan) and Korath (Djimon Hounsou), and by extension for Thanos. Gamora doesn’t necessarily like doing that anymore, and tries to find a new path for herself. But she has such a reputation as the deadliest woman in the galaxy that people aren’t greeting her with open arms.”
Words from Marvel chief Kevin Feige in an interview with Empire Magazine.
I assume this registers with those of you who’ve read the comic. But those who haven’t, and I’m betting that means the vast majority of you (including myself), now you know a little more about the character than you did before.
Zoe Saldana plays the female lead in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy big screen adaptation. And Marvel is ringing in the new year with a first official look (hi-res version at the link below) at the starring cast in character/costume of one of its most secretive projects.
Saldana is a character named Gamora, described as “the green-skinned humanoid who is the last of a species that was exterminated by a race known as the Badoon. She also happens to be a skilled assassin,” and according to Marvel Chief Kevin Feige above, she’s the deadliest woman in the galaxy, who makes a switch for the better, from working for the bad guys, to joining the good guys – the Guardians of the Galaxy.
The character sounds like a combination of Neytiri (the character she played in Avatar) and Cataleya, the character she played in Colombiana.
Ms Saldana joins Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, and Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, in the movie adaptation of the superhero movie franchise (potentially).
Also, Bradley Cooper will voice the Rocket Raccoon character, described as a sometimes over-enthusiastic weapons expert; and Vin Diesel is Groot, the giant tree-like creature.
Djimon Hounsou is playing a villain named Korath the Pursuer.
James Gunn is directing the movie, with Disney releasing it on August 1, 2014.
Another intriguing career move here for Zoe. She’s certainly no stranger to sci-fi/fantasy material – Avatar and Star Trek to start – as well as action adventure movies (Colombiana, The Losers). So she should be very comfortable here, and playing the female lead should only raise her mainstream profile and box office appeal even higher – even though she’ll be covered in lots of make-up as you can see.
In addition to the much talked about Nina Simone film she stars in, Zoe also option the mystery/thriller novel Hell Or High Water (the debut novel from Joy Castro), via her production company Saldana Productions, which she runs with her sister Cisley Saldana.
