I was sorry to have missed this at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival (which all seems like a distant memory to me now, with another festival looming, which I leave for a week from today). It was one of the films I really wanted to check out. The trailer definitely promised something worthwhile.

I still haven't seen it, and hope to soon enough. I've heard and read mixed reactions to it, so I want to see it for myself. I'm told the story is quite involved and meaty, and not necessarily what you might expect based on that one-sentence synopsis and the trailer; there's also been some *controversy* surrounding the film's production, but nothing I've been able to confim yet.

I just want to see it first 🙂

It won the top prize, the Jury Prize in Short Filmmaking, and today I learned that Fishing Without Nets by director Cutter Hodierne – the story of pirates in Somalia, told from the perspective of the pirates themselves – is becoming a feature-length film, with plans to start shooting in South Africa this summer!

That was fast; then again, I suppose that may have always been the intent; and I'm sure the big win at Sundance only helped boost its profile, and maybe even helped it get that last bit of financing it needed to produce a feature from the 17-minute short.

I'll have more on this as I learn more. This might be a project we'll be chatting about some time next year.
