The 1988 short, a collaboration between David Johnson and Butch Robinson, is called The Session and was the inspiration for the social satire film Drop Squad which was produced by Spike Lee.

The story is about a group that attempts to “deprogram” and restore black pride in upwardly, mobile professionals. It stars Eric Payne, Vondie Curtis Hall, Dwania Kyles and Leonard Thomas. The flick was actually based on another short film titled The Deprogrammer by David Taylor.

Johnson went on to direct Drop Squad and although the film was never a critical or financial success, the social commentary is timeless.
