Kim Burrell has found herself caught up in yet another controversy, this time facing backlash for referring to a churchgoer as “ugly.” According to Sportskeeda, video shows the gospel singer bashing several attendees and insinuating they were broke. Twitter isn’t happy with her recent comments and, as a result, has rehashed some of her problematic ways.

Recently, Burrell had a lot to say during one of Pastor Brian Carn’s services. She used her time on the podium to come for attendees, singling some out by insinuating they weren’t looking their best and accused churchgoers of being strapped for cash.

“Sometimes before we get friends we have to do an interview: How long you been broke? How many times have you changed your name on your light bill? How many of your bills are in your little cousin’s name? Do you live in a trailer home or a house?” she said.

“I haven’t chosen anyone to be ugly yet. God is good. God is great. You all look great. Most of you have on hats covering most of that anyway. Here’s to you,” she continued.

After the video surfaced of her recent comments, people took to Twitter to dive into her past.

“Again. The queers called it on Kim Burrell. but now that it’s not just fruitcups standing in the rain, it’s a problem for the general population. We remember,” one Twitter user wrote.

“Kim Burrell has BEEN problematic. People are arguing semantics about this most recent clip and trying to decipher what she actually meant, but it doesn’t matter. Her reputation precedes her,” another tweeted.

In 2016, video surfaced of the gospel singer giving a sermon where she said gay people will die for their sins, Billboard reports.

“You as a man, you open your mouth and take a man’s penis in your face, you are perverted… You are a woman and will shake your face in another woman’s breast, you are perverted,” Burrell said, according to People.

According to The Washington Post, she also referred to homosexuality as “that perverted homosexual spirit.”

At the time, Burrell was slated to appear on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Her scheduled appearance was swiftly canceled as LGBTQ+ advocates spoke out against her.

 

People also discussed how problematic her recent comments were.

“In my book I wrote about the dynamics in the Black church that harm Black women. Sometimes Black women like Kim Burrell are the ones doing the harm in the church. From taking shots at underprivileged people to the ignorant comments about Covid, this should never be allowed,” author Shanita Hubbard tweeted.

Burrell issued an apology following the video, but many are not impressed and called her statement insincere.

“This is what we call gaslighting. This is what we call a non apology-apology. This is what we call doubling down on stupid. This is what we call fake accountability. Basically, I did it but y’all doing it to me too. Oh and my lawyers are on deck btw! Kim Burrell is a joke,” one user shared on Twitter with a screenshot of her apology.
