Jermaine Dupri tried to make up for his recent controversial comments about female rappers, but hip-hop heads weren’t buying it.
Last Thursday, Dupri caught a lot of flack after he criticized the current generation of female rappers. He made the disparaging comments during an interview with People TV.
“For me, it’s like strippers rapping,’” Dupri said. “As far as rap goes, I’m not getting who is the best rapper. Oh, you got a story about you dancing in the club, you got a story about you dancing in the club, you got a story about you dancing in the club. OK, all right.”
A day later, Dupri responded to the criticism with a flyer for a “SoSoDef Female Cypher.”
After all the calls,DMs, angry tweets and other messages saying “I am a major gatekeeper in the hip hop world, why don’t I invest in a female who is out here hustling and making a name for herself?” I decided to create the #SoSoDefFemalecypher, details coming soon pic.twitter.com/Nyxl5KpPXZ

The attempted mea culpa was met with more criticism.

Looking forward to a time when these ideas come before such comments. Better late than never, but never late is better.

I can assure you nobody thinks you’re the deciding factor in what makes a great rapper male or female.. deflate that ego and recognize your place. I can name 5 new artists that outshine you on your best day. Just stop it.

You had PLENTY of opportunities to sign GREAT young female artists on the Rap Game and develop them into these so called female rappers you want to see! Hopefully this new venture you are creating will be about talent HOWEVER they want to Express themselves…

That’s not actually how this works! Use your money to INVEST in a womxn who’s ALREADY signing and cultivating women rappers and be a SILENT partner, until SHE asks you for your presence!!! pic.twitter.com/g9Z7CWhiKO

Musician 6lack wasn't into it either.
women in hip hop don’t need representation/approval from men (ya cypher sounds more reactive than proactive). if u don’t have a fav artist that hits on the subjects u wanna hear, u could solve that wit a quick search & some support. plus, IF they do wanna talk about sex, they can https://t.co/9nX46FDUia
