As Blavity previously reported, Williams-Holliday recently became the first HBCU athlete to be drafted into the WNBA in 20 years. The Jackson State University athlete was specifically the 25th overall draft pick, and she celebrated the matter among family and friends in Gulfport, Mississippi.
“I’m very grateful for this opportunity to continue my career on the next level and, most importantly, to continue to be a great example for my son Jace and my younger siblings and for the kids in my community,” Williams-Holliday said of the accomplishment. “I want every HBCU athlete to never lose hope and to know anything is possible.”
“It’s an honor, a dream come true and a blessing to be able to be a part of history and to be able to open doors for our HBCU community,” she continued. “Being a trail blazer feels amazing, but there is so much more to accomplish.”

The Indiana Fever did not publicly elaborate on this decision.
In spite of the less-than-ideal news, Williams-Holliday is grateful for the opportunity to have been drafted and is ready to continue with her career.
“Thank you all for your support. This has been one amazing ride. Making history in getting drafted and having an opportunity to compete and learn has been phenomenal,” she tweeted. “This is not the end. The journey continues. I’m excited for what’s next!”
