Family, friends and football fans are mourning the loss of Jessie Lemonier, who died Thursday at 25.

ESPN reports that the former NFL linebacker played for the Los Angeles Chargers after being drafted by the team in 2020 and before joining the Detroit Lions in the following season.

In November 2022, the XFL’s Arlington Renegades drafted the athlete, but signed with the USFL’s Houston Gamblers, who traded him to the Birmingham Stallions ahead of the upcoming season.

The Los Angeles Chargers announced Lemonier’s death on Twitter.

“Gone too soon,” the team wrote. “Our hearts are with Jessie’s family, friends and loved ones.”

The Lions also reacted to Lemonier’s passing.

“We are shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of former Detroit Lion Jessie Lemonier,” a statement published by the Lions read, per People. “Jessie was a model teammate and wonderful young man who is gone far too soon.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time,” the team added.

As People reported, Lemonier’s agent told ESPN that he was expecting his first child with his girlfriend.

His cause of death is unknown.
