The cast for legendary director Francis Ford Coppola’s self-funded film Megalopolis has rounded out, with Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel and more attached.
The project is written and directed by Coppola and stars:
Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Forest Whitaker, Jon Voight, and Laurence Fishburne, who also worked with the director on Apocolypse Now. The film is said to be an ambitious tale that explores the idea of a utopian society that is on the brink of collapse.
The official logline for the film: The fate of Rome haunts a modern world unable to solve its own social problems in this epic story of political ambition, genius, and conflicted love.
Coppola has self-funded the project, which has an estimated budget coming in just under $100 million.
The Godfather director spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about self-funding the film, saying of the process, “There’s a certain way everyone thinks a film should be, and it rubs against the grain if you have another idea. People can be very unaccepting, but sometimes the other idea represents what’s coming in the future. That is worthy of being considered.”
Coppola has also spoken about the impact of his films and the desire for his next great work to be something that he can leave behind to stand the time for generations to see, telling Deadline, “So somewhere down the line, way after I’m gone, all I want is for them to discuss [Megalopolis] and, is the society we’re living in the only one available to us? How can we make it better? Education, mental health? What the movie really is proposing is that utopia is not a place. It’s how can we make everything better?”
Adam Driver has recently starred in two Ridley Scott epics, The Last Duel and House of Gucci, and will star in the upcoming Noah Baumbach Netflix drama White Noise. Nathalie Emmanuel is set to return to the Fast and Furious franchise in Fast X and will next be seen in a new horror film called The Bride.
