Gabrielle Union said she and her husband, Dwyane Wade, shouldn’t be praised for parenting their daughter, Zaya, who came out as transgender in December 2019.
Union appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Monday and discussed the praise they have received since opening up about raising Zaya, saying it’s weird to be applauded for doing what you’re supposed to, according to Them.
“To us, it’s a little odd to get any kind of recognition for doing what you’re supposed to do, which is love and accept and embrace your kids,” Union said. “But unfortunately, there are so many people who just don’t. They just don’t. So many people truly feel like their kids are disposable.”
