A Georgia high school teacher was placed on paid administrative leave for linking “white trash” to the Confederate Flag, reports WRDW, a local CBS affiliate.

The teacher reportedly put up a picture of the flag along with a message on the board, according to a student.

The flag is “a sticker you put on the back of your pickup truck to announce that you intend to marry your sister. Think of it like a white trash ‘Save the Date’ card,” the text read.

A picture of the post was shared on social media and invited criticism from parents, the report said.

The school district released a statement in regards to the Hephzibah High School teacher’s post.

“The Richmond County School System is committed to creating a diverse, equitable learning environment for all students,” the statement said. “The language used in the example was unacceptable and has no place in our classrooms.”

The battle flag, adopted by Southern pro-slavery states during the Civil War, remains a controversial topic, reports CBS News.

Hephzibah is a small community near Augusta, Georgia. The state's official flag included an image of the Confederate battle flag until its removal in 2003, CBS News reports.

In July, a Black Georgia couple told a man who'd been planning to do work in their home that he could turn right on around after arriving at their property with a confederate flag hanging from his truck.
