GirlTrek is winding down its inspiring #BlackHistoryBootcamp with its final installment this year– The Prayer Edition.
The initiative, which started as a nine-day event, is now a three-week street revival intended “to cover the streets of America in prayer and to celebrate 21 spiritual warriors who inspire us to keep the faith and act right in perilous times," according to the organization’s press release.
The event, which starts on Thursday, Oct. 1, is a community favorite to many of the participants who take part in the heavily anticipated walking campaign. The virtual walk, which will be held daily at noon, will aim to liberate and teach love through biblical passages.
Participants can register for the event for free and listen to the accompanying podcast #BlackHistoryBootCamp on Apple, Spotify and Buzzsprout.
GirlTrek co-founder T. Morgan Dixon encourages Black women to bond through spirituality and exercise.“Please join me and Vanessa [GirlTrek’s other founding member] as we spend 21 days in active spiritual warfare against everything that comes to kill, steal and destroy,” Dixon said.
“Join us as we cover the streets of America in prayer. Join us as we seek the guidance of our ancestors, who dared not launch any justice strategy without circling up in church basements in prayer. Join us as we show the world the evolution of Black righteousness forged through decades of terror,” she continued.
The final installment follows the Acts of Resistance edition dedicated to Black female historical and cultural disruptors like Audre Lorde, Shirley Chisholm, Georgia Gilmore and Nina Simone.
With more than 100,000 people who joined #BlackHistoryBootcamp, it is the organization’s most successful walking event to date.
GirlTrek is the largest Black health movement in the country, with nearly 900,000 members. Its focus is to provide resources to facilitate better health and lifestyle for Black women and girls. The organization’s primary focus is to “encourage Black women to use radical self-care and walking as the first practical step to leading healthier, more fulfilled lives.”
Co-founders Dixon and Vanessa Garrison are on a mission to bring one million women into the GirlTrek fold by the end of 2020.
In September, Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan implemented a gym shoe raffle with the sneaker app GOAT to generate revenue for GirlTrek, as Blavity previously reported.
The talented actor spoke about his inspiration behind using athletic shoes for fundraising for the nonprofit outlet.
"I've loved sneakers since I was a kid, and there are so many people in the sneaker community that inspire me. Coming up at a time where I couldn't afford all these kicks, I would use my imagination to think about what my sneaker would look like if I had a chance to build it," Jordan said in a statement.
"More importantly, I'm excited to help bring awareness to the health movement amongst African-American women, a cause that's close to me and my family," he added.
