As Vice President Kamala Harris begins serving her term, her hometown's basketball team is proudly sending her love and a special memento from its star player.
In a video tribute honoring the Oakland native’s meteoric political rise, the NBA's Golden State Warriors thanked Harris this week for her unwavering commitment to the Bay Area and being a role model for the next generation of women leaders. A young Oakland girl named Stella, the adorable star of the short video, says she “likes” that Harris is from her city and loves that “Kamala looks like me.”

It is that type of representation that Warriors hope to inspire as they presented Harris with an autographed No. 49 jersey, in homage to her being the 49th vice president of America. From her start as a deputy district attorney in California’s Alameda County to elevating into a celebrated U.S. senator, Harris’ experiences have molded her into a savvy politician and a trailblazer.
She now enters her time in the White House as the first Black woman vice president in the history of the country, among other firsts, and Warriors star player Stephen Curry is hoping that she displays her team pride while holding down the position.
“Madam Vice President,” Curry said in the video. “I’m not saying you have to put this up in your office in the White House, but it’d probably be a good idea. Congratulations on blazing your own path. We’re all rooting for you and supporting you the whole way.”
Graciously, Harris accepted the signed jersey and agreed to save space in her new office to show it off.
“I will proudly, proudly display this,” Harris responded in the video. “You always bring such joy and pride to me as a daughter of Oakland. This is really so very special, so thank you all, and I hope to see you soon. Go, Warriors!”
On Wednesday night, the Warriors played the video at halftime during their game against the San Antonio Spurs, according to The Root. After a Warriors win, Steve Kerr, head coach of the team, expressed that he and the Bay Area had great pride in Harris’ accomplishments.
“It’s a great day,” Kerr said. “It’s one of the reasons we’re wearing our [Oakland Forever] jerseys tonight. We’re taking great pride in the fact that Kamala Harris is from Oakland and was inaugurated today as vice president. Just a huge day, obviously, in our nation’s history and for the Bay Area as well. So it’s great to be able to honor her and her big day by wearing this uniform.”
On the evening of the inauguration, Harris gave her first speech on the National Mall in front of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, urging Americans to unify and come together in these perilous times, as Blavity previously reported.
"It is my honor to be here, to stand on the shoulders of those who came before, to speak tonight as your vice president. In many ways, this moment embodies our character as a nation. It demonstrates who we are. Even in dark times, we not only dream — we do," Harris said.
"We not only see what has been, we see what can be. We shoot for the moon, and then we plant our flag on it. We are bold, fearless and ambitious."
