In addition to those who've looked to migrate to America in hopes of a better life, Haitians, El Salvadorans and Hondurans currently living in the states are also being threatened under the Trump administration. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) could deport hundreds of thousands of immigrants by 2020, and The Washington Post reports that as a result, 273,000 American children could be separated from their parents by 2020.
Despite 45’s decision to discontinue his heartless zero tolerance separation policy (which should have never been put in place at all), the thousands of immigrants separated from their families will still reap the horrible consequences of being ripped apart from their families. The administration wants to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and Honduras.
TPS offers indefinite protection from deportation for those who do not want to return to the horrors of their home countries.
With the decision to terminate deportation protection, parents who've benefited from the program are stuck between a rock and a hard place. They’ll be forced to decide between taking their children back to unsafe, foreign countries (as they’re American-born), or simply leave their children behind in the U.S., without their parents.
The Washington Post also says over 80% of TPS protected immigrants work, pay taxes, and like everybody else, work hard. Additionally, these deportations would cost the U.S. billions of dollars.
All we can do is watch and wait, and hope a heart appears somewhere within the terrorizing administration.
