Plus he’ll be present for each screening, both followed a Master Class with the filmmaker.

Philadelphia, PA – On Tuesday, February 4, Scribe Video Center hosts internationally acclaimed filmmaker Raoul Peck for screenings of two of his latest films: Moloch Tropical and the provocative documentary Fatal Assistance. The films will screen at the International House Philadelphia as part of Scribe’s Producers’ Forum series, which brings distinguished independent filmmakers to Philadelphia.
Hailed by critics as “gripping” (New York Times), “audacious” (Variety), and “brilliant” (Premiere), Peck’s Moloch Tropical (Haiti/France 2009 107 min) is a dramatic feature film about a president of a Caribbean island nation and his final day in office. In a fortress perched on the top of a mountain, a democratically elected President and his closest collaborators are getting ready for a state celebration. Foreign chiefs of state and dignitaries of all sorts are expected. But in the morning of the event, he wakes up to find the country inflamed the streets in turmoil. As the day goes on, rebellion worsens. Meanwhile, expected guests are withdrawing from the party one after another…
Peck’s feature documentary Fatal Assistance (Assistance mortelle) (Haiti, 2013, 99 min) takes us on a 2-year journey inside the challenging, contradictory and colossal rebuilding efforts in post-earthquake Haiti. The film dives headlong into the complexity of the reconstruction process and the practice and impact of worldwide humanitarian and development aid, revealing in the most disturbing way the extent of a general failure. Offering a devastating indictment of the international community’s post-disaster idealism. Fatal Assistance leads to the only plausible outcome: an immediate stop of current aid policies and practice.
Raoul Peck will also teach a Master Class at Scribe Video Center and lead a critique session of select films by students in Temple’s Department of Film and Media Arts.
