The Yemeni American Merchant Association has announced a formal boycott of the New York Post, after it's Thursday cover placed quotes from a March speech by Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) over an image of the Sept. 11 attacks.

The boycott comes after many asked the Democratic party to support the congresswoman, who saw backlash from her comments about being Muslim in a post 9/11 world to the Council on American Islamic Relations.

"For far too long we have lived with the discomfort of being a second-class citizen. Frankly, I’m tired of it. And every single Muslim in this country should be tired of it. CAIR was founded after 9/11 because they recognized that some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties,” Omar said.

Organizers of the boycott are asking for four separate demands;

  • For the Post to make a public apology to Rep. Omar, as well as all Muslim Americans and other minorities they have  portrayed in extreme manners
  • For the Post to abandon all tabloid tactics
  • For the Post to fire Editor-in-Chief Stephen Lynch
  • For elected officials to stop giving the New York Post “any platforms to spread hate and racism."

Dr. Debbie Almontaser, co-founder of the Yemeni American Merchants Association, told WNYC other stores have agreed to stop carrying the paper.

And while not all elected officials have come to Rep. Omar's defense, some, like Rep. Rashida Tlaib, said it was hypocritical of Democrats to speak on diversity but remain silent for Omar.
