“It’s got a leg like me!”.

That’s what Houston resident Emma Bennett shouted after receiving a very special gift. The 10-year-old became a ball of emotion at the sight of her own matching doll.

Bennett was given an American Girl doll courtesy of A Step Ahead Prosthetics, specifically designed with her in mind. When she was 9 months old, Bennett’s leg was amputated due to a rare birth defect. She was soon fitted for a prosthetic and has used one ever since.

Over the years, she grew accustomed to her new appendage and has lived a happy, fulfilling life even joining her school’s cheer squad. But in the back of her mind, she’s always yearned for a doll that looked like her.

Watch what happened when Bennett got her wish.

This is why representation is important for young girls. It may seem small, but seeing a positive reflection of yourself in any form works wonders.

The proof is in Bennett’s closing remarks, “Thank you. Thank you for making a doll like me.”
