Idris Elba and Cynthia Erivo have both received awards of the highest distinction in the United Kingdom.
King Charles III knighted Elba, while Erivo received a Member of the Order of the British Empire medal during Monday’s New Year’s Honors List.
“This year’s honours list celebrates the very best of Britain — people who put the common good ahead of themselves to strengthen communities and change lives,” British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said, according to Deadline. “Their quiet dedication speaks to the decent, compassionate country we are proud to be. On behalf of the whole nation, thank you — and congratulations to everyone recognised today.”

The actor was recognized during Monday’s New Year’s Honors List. This annual British tradition celebrates individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities or have reached recognition in their field. King Charles III made Elba a Knight of the Realm and will receive the title of Sir from now on. He received the distinction for his “services to Young People.” Elba had already received an MBE.
The actor has become a standout figure in entertainment thanks to his roles in The Wire, Luther and A House of Dynamite. He was also recognized for his charity work via the Elba Hope Foundation, which supports community empowerment, education and sustainable development. The actor has also campaigned against knife crime in the U.K. and starred in a documentary this year alongside the king and the prime minister.
