The New York Times bestselling book The Hate U Give began as a college essay by Angie Thomas and has become a motion picture film set to premiere later this year. Thomas beat the odds against her. She's inspiring little black girls worldwide and proving despite circumstances dreams do come true.

On Twitter, the author and activist described overcoming adversity and growing up in her Mississippi childhood home, sometimes without lights and sometimes being on welfare, and remaining unapologetically "hood."

The trailer premiered at this year's BookCon in New York City but wasn't released publicly until the BET Awards show on Sunday, June 24.

The brilliant author and sprinkler of Black Girl Magic proudly announced the trailer's debut via Twitter:

The novel centers around a young black girl who is facing the traumatic aftermath of losing a close (unarmed) friend to police violence. The film's actors are some of our faves: Amandla Stenberg, Common, Issa Rae, Regina Hall and more. You have a few months to snag your copy, as the film hits theaters October 19, 2018.
