Don’t blame me. Blame Cynthia! She started it with her piece about The Legend of Nigger Charley That reminded me of my Shadow And Act piece I wrote back in April 2009 about Fred Williamson’s western Boss Nigger. As I said back then (and I don’t regret one word of it):

The tag line for the film said it all: “White man’s town, BLACK MAN’S law.”

I can’t express the happiness I have just saying those lines. Fred Williamson‘s Boss Nigger (with it’s memorial title song intact) has just been released on DVD from VCI Enetrtainment (under the cover title of just Boss to avoid offending any wusses or delicate sensibilities).

If any of you out there have never seen what is derisively called a “blaxploitation” film, or like me, want to relive, if only briefly, that golden age of cinema, please get a hold of this DVD pronto.

The low budget film, directed by veteran Hollywood B movie director Jack Arnold, is complete fun and actually has does have some original odd twists and upends some old traditional western film cliches.

The plot isn’t groundbreaking but you do see Williamson and co-star D’urville Martin defend the weak and defenseless, helping the poor and feeding hungry kids; but the basic point is to see a strong black man getting back at every white guy who racially insults him or tries to kill him (and that means literally every white man in the entire film). OH JOY! OH RAPTURE!

How I miss the days of black men getting back at every evil white racist man in movies. Go ahead, name me an actor who could play the lead in this film today. Will Smith? Not likely. Samuel Jackson? He would blow it while screaming at the top of his lungs. Whimpering cry baby voicedTerrance Howard? ARE YOU KIDDING? Tyler Perry? Please. Let’s not go there

I can watch Boss Nigger over and over again. For me it’s pure joy of a bygone era.
