On Sunday, Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake performed a skit entitled “Songversation” on The
Tonight Show, in which they have a conversation entirely through song. The duo has performed the skit before, but this time it caught the attention of songstress India.Arie, who has built a stage presence based on her albums “Songversation,” according to The Jasmine Brand.
Feeling as though her work was stolen and disrespected by the Tonight Show, Arie responded by going on Twitter and writing, “I hear the Jimmy Fallon show appropriated my sacred word #songversation last night for a skit. Just to be clear – I’m offended.”
I hear the @jimmyfallon show appropriated my sacred word #songversation Last night for a skit. ???? just be clear ~ Im offended. ????— India.Arie (@indiaarie) February 5, 2018
Some fans, however, were not convinced that Fallon intentionally misused Arie’s album title.
Thank you for your cool tone. ✌???? https://t.co/csAytVv3UN— India.Arie (@indiaarie) February 6, 2018
But Arie tackled naysayers by citing "SongVersation" as the name of two of her known albums, as well as the name behind all of her performances.
#SongVersation is the name of 2 of my albums AND ALL of my performances – since 2010 – those who have witnessed ~ KNOW. I demand reapect. https://t.co/UoHdHWRN4Z— India.Arie (@indiaarie) February 5, 2018
As of Tuesday, Fallon and The Tonight Show have yet to respond.
