Malia Obama - on the GIRLS SetShe’s just turned 17 years old (her birthday is on July 4), although in another year, or so, she’ll be off to college, where she’ll have to settle on a major, and it just might be cinema.

Last year, the first daughter worked as a production assistant on the set of Halle Berry‘s Steven Spielberg-produced sci-fi series “Extant,” which returned for a second season this summer.

A year later, Malia has reportedly landed another internship – this time on the set of Lena Dunham’s hit HBO series "Girls," also working as a PA (production assistant). Lots of photos, like the collage above (courtesy of Daily Mail UK), can be found online.

She still has one more year to go at the private Sidwell Friends School in D.C. (the same school that Chelsea Clinton, Tricia Nixon Cox, and Archibald Roosevelt attended, and that the grandchildren of Vice President Joe Biden attend) before heading off to college. She and her mother, the FLOTUS, have been touring the campuses of colleges like NYU (very well known for its film program), as well as Columbia, and Stanford.

Hollywood is an industry in which many start from the bottom – as a production assistant, as Malia is, for example – learning how production sets (TV or film) operate, eventually picking a specific path of interest and treading it. Maybe that’s what Malia is doing here.

It’s an entry-level position that includes providing support and assistance in almost all areas of production, and can also work for specific departments, which can be of great advantage to any candidate, when you’re getting started. The varied experiences gained from working with different departments can help one decide on which department one may want to specialize in, and afford them the opportunity to make connections with crew members in those fields.

It’s certainly not the most exciting of set positions, but it’s a start.

Let’s wait to find out if Malia is indeed truly interested in the business, or if this is simply a passing fancy. Although, in a January 2014 profile of President Obama by David Remnick for the New Yorker, it was revealed that Malia was an aspiring filmmmaker, so maybe our question has been answered officially, in addition to the fact that she’s interned on 2 TV series sets, in back-to-back years, during her summer breaks. Maybe in 15 years we’ll be writing about Malia Obama being in contention to direct the 5th Black Panther movie.
