J. Cole is already starting out 2017 on a strong note. Last week, it was announced that his 4 Your Eyez Only album has already gone gold while his single “Deja Vu” tears up the radio charts, reaching the Top 100 top 10 hits.
While the rest of us were sleeping in, the Dreamville rapper released his first song of 2017 called “High For Hours,” a track where Cole gets deep into the issues of oppression and the hypocrisy of America with their vicious cycle of elitism. He also goes into details about him meeting President Barack Obama and his thought process before head.
I had a convo with the president, I paid to go and see him
Thinking bout the things I said I'd say when I would see him
Feeling nervous, sitting in a room full of white folks
Thinking about the black man plight, think I might choke, nope
Raised my hand and asked a man a question
'Does he see the struggles of his brother in oppression?
And if so, if you got all the power in the clout as the president
What's keeping you from helping niggas out?
The soulful yet liberal track, produced by Cam O’Bi & Elite, couldn’t have chosen a better day to be released other than Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The title is controversial but the message in necessary. Take a listen, run it back again and then share your thoughts below!
