In addition to Teniya Morant’s team at Mississippi Valley State, Ja Morant gave the athletic programs at four other institutions an early opportunity to wear his new shoes. He gave his unreleased Nike Ja 1s to Murray State, his alma mater; Radford, where his former Murray State assistant Shane Nichols is now coaching; and Memphis, his hometown.

The fourth school, Mississippi Valley State, received a particular edition shoe in a colorway unavailable to the public. Due to his sister’s participation on the Delta Devilettes team, the HBCU was gifted the unreleased kicks.

Ja is six years older than his sister, who also goes by Niya. During her senior year at Houston High School, where she had a reputation for toughness and spirit, she averaged 11.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.5 steals. She chose MVSU over Grambling and played most of her senior year before getting her first scholarship offer, according to Fan Buzz.

Although the NBA player has been suspended from the league, Ja has supported his sister at several games, including bringing his daughter to root for Niya at her Queen of the Court competition at an Overtime Elite Takeover event.

The HBCU plans to redshirt Niya this season, but Teniya has been in uniform and on the bench. Like her teammates, she has been spotted sporting the flyest sneakers. Notwithstanding the team’s landslide results, which saw walk-ons end each game, she hasn’t participated in any of the team’s exhibitions or the first two regular season games.
