We last posted our first look of Dan Schechter‘s Life of Crime back in July. Details are scant at the moment, but we do know that the film is currently in negotiations between Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions for a stateside distribution deal worth “several million dollars.”
Life of Crime was based on Elmore Leonard’s novel The Switch (the original 1997 film, Jackie Brown, which starred Pam Grier, was also based on an Elmore Leonard novel, titled Rum Punch).
Starring Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def), John Hawkes (star of Sundance 2012 hit The Surrogate), Tim Robbins and Jennifer Aniston, Life is the closing night film at Toronto Film Festival this Saturday, but it has already screened for the press, industry and buyers.
To recap, this prequel will focus on the relationship between Ordell and Gara, characters played by Samuel L. Jackson and Robert De Niro in the original film, and now will be played by Yasiin Bey and John Hawkes.
No Jackie Brown present here.
Here’s a synopsis:
Ordell Robbie and Louis Gara hit it off in prison, where they were both doing time for grand theft auto. Now that they’re out, they’re joining forces for one big score. The plan is to kidnap the wife of a wealthy Detroit developer and hold her for ransom. But they didn’t figure the lowlife husband wouldn’t want his lady back. So it’s time for Plan B and the opportunity to make a real killing — with the unlikely help of a beautiful, ticked-off housewife who’s hungry for a large helping of sweet revenge.
Jackie Brown was both a commercial and critical success, raking in over $72 million in box office worldwide, on a $12 million budget. It also earned co-star Robert Forster an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
No trailer yet, but the first official still from the film is above.
