On the day before a Wisconsin court made its ruling in the Kyle Rittenhouse trial, Jacob Blake gave his thoughts on the situation, TMZ reports.
Blake, who was shot seven times by officer Rusten Sheskey in Kenosha, Wisconsin, last year, said he wishes that his situation never led to the protest where Rittenhouse opened fire.
"I wish this didn't happen to me, but I also wish that it didn't escalate to the point where it caused a riot," he said. "I'm not happy about that."
The 30-year-old father also said Rittenhouse would be thrown in prison if he weren't white.
"If he was of a different ethnicity, he would be gone," he said. "There would be no 'he's a hero.' They would have said he's under age, he traveled to a different state with a firearm that didn't belong to him."
Blake pointed to the infamous photo of Rittenhouse flashing what appears to be a white supremacy sign after posting bond. He said the image is another example of how the teenager benefited from white privilege.
"The judge seems like he really likes the guy," Blake told TMZ.
The Kenosha resident reflected back on the brutal beating of Rodney King as he emphasized how injustice has been taking place in America for too long.
"Thirty years later, here I am," he said.
Blake also encouraged others to refrain from rioting, despite the ruling in Rittenhouse's trial.
"It's not gonna fix anything," he said. "Destroying stuff does not fix it."
As Blavity previously reported, Rittenhouse said he fired in self-defense as he was approached by a "mob" of protesters.
“I didn’t intend to kill them. I intended to stop the people who were attacking me. I did what I had to do to stop the person who was attacking me,” he said.
Like many Americans who are outraged by the verdict, Blake said the teenager should have never gone to the protest.
"He should have never been out there, no matter if these people try to kick him in the face, hit him with a skateboard," Blake said.
As Blavity previously reported, a jury of five men and seven women delivered the verdict in Rittenhouse's case on Friday, dismissing all counts against the 18-year-old.
