Rapper and actor Jaden Smith launched a one-day pop-up food truck in one of Los Angeles' poorest communities, exemplifying what it means to use fame for the good of others.
The childhood star took to Instagram to share the details of his newest project, The I Love You Restaurant.
Smith describes the project as a “movement” that is about giving people healthy vegan food free of charge. Smith is one of many celebrities using their influence to advocate for an environmentally conscious and healthy plant-based lifestyle. Megan Thee Stallion, Beyoncé and Jay-Z have also encouraged their audiences to opt for a vegan diet.
In a Sunday Instagram post, he said that the pop-up would be the first of many.
The first pop-up took place on Monday in downtown Los Angeles, where the truck served what appeared to be a mostly Black homeless population. According to the Los Angeles Almanac, 38% of the homeless population in Los Angeles was Black in 2019 — the highest percentage of homeless people of any race/ethnic group in the county.
In the video, people can be seen lining up to grab their paper bag of food on Skid Row, an area that has become widely associated with homelessness and poverty as it consists of one of the largest homeless populations in The U.S., according to Dazed Digital.
Just last week, Smith was involved in another community service event. He appeared at Shia LaBeouf’s charity event “Sacred Spectacle." The event was hosted in an effort to raise money for his inclusive theatre school in LA and featured other celebrity appearances from musicians such as YG, Kamaiyah and Vic Mensa.
In addition to his work in the community, the 20-year-old songwriter has been promoting his new album ERYS which was released on July 5.
