In a candid interview with Essence, Jamie Foxx opened up about lessons he learned from his daughters, having children with women outside of his race and his decision to avoid marriage. While diving into the various aspects of his life, the actor and comedian recalled an anecdote from his book, Act Like You Got Some Sense: And Other Things My Daughters Taught Me.
The story involved Foxx's daughter Corinne, who challenged her father when he tried to give her advice about how she should expect to be treated by boys. The young woman asked her father, who has two children by two different women, how he'd know anything about love.
“My face cracked,” Foxx told Essence as he recalled the dialogue. “It really shook me, but then I gathered myself. I said, ‘Yeah, you’re right. Life ain’t perfect, that’s the first thing you gotta understand; relationships aren’t perfect. But one thing you can attest to is you, your mom, and anybody around you, if you say I need you, I’m there 1,000 percent.'”
The 53-year-old also addressed having children with non-Black women.
“With me and my dating and my kids, I’ve been very tight with that because I am a Black man and I’m aware of that," he said. "I’m aware of my Blackness in every single way, but I like to keep my life private.”
But the actor said he's never felt judged for who he chose to partner with.
“Everything in my world is Black, even the white folks," he continued. "I take those same white people to the George Floyd [rally] and we gone watch Do the Right Thing too."
Despite whatever others may think about his interracial relationships, Foxx said everything has simply been about love.
"I didn’t hide the fact that I love my Black folk and I didn’t want any of that to define me or make it seem like it was anything other than I had children with people I loved at that time and still love," he said. "I don’t want that to cloud anything because I’m not that dude.”
In regard to his stance on marriage, the Hollywood star said, "I just never saw it in my life.” Despite this, the Dreamgirls actor added that he still wants to love and care for somebody.
Foxx talked more about his perspective on dating when he sat down for an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2012.
"I'm a very loving person when it comes to connecting with somebody and being there," he said.
The actor hesitated to affirm his stance on long-term relationships while speaking with Oprah.
"As I got older, I can't really take the chance like I would when I was in my 20s," he said. "You have to be with someone who allows you to talk and listens to you."
When asked about his relationship status at the time, Foxx declined to answer. He also advised other celebrities to keep their dating life private.
"Whoever you're dating, don't let anybody know," he said.
