Several NBA teams have made trades ahead of Thursday’s deadline, including the Philadelphia 76ers. The organization traded standout Jared McCain to the Oklahoma City Thunder for a 2026 Houston Rockets first-round pick and three second-round picks, sources confirmed to ESPN’s Shams Charania on Wednesday.
Details on the Sixers and Thunder NBA trade deals
The Sixers will receive a 2027 second-round pick and two 2028 second-round picks as part of the deal, according to ESPN.
Before his NBA career, McCain, who is known for having a massive presence on social media, was a college star at Duke University and aspired to have the same success at the professional level.
“I’ve always been a dream chaser, I’ve always been one to reach my goals, and that next one is the NBA,” McCain said in a 2023 Instagram video, per Blavity. “So with that being said, I will be entering my name into the 2024 NBA Draft. I’m blessed and honored to be a part of The Brotherhood, and I’ll be a Blue Devil for life.”
Jared McCain had previous injuries during his NBA career
McCain, the No. 16 pick in the 2024 draft, averaged 6.6 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists while shooting 38.5% in 16.8 minutes per game for the Sixers this season, per ESPN.
He made his season debut on Nov. 4 after returning from a thumb injury. In his rookie season, he averaged 15.3 points on 46 percent shooting overall and 38.3 percent from three in 25 minutes per game, per ESPN and The New York Post.
However, in mid-December, McCain missed most of his rookie year after undergoing season-ending surgery for a lateral meniscus tear in his left knee, despite earlier reports naming him a top pick for Rookie of the Year, according to Blavity.
What will Oklahoma City receive in the trade deal?
The deal involving McCain also benefits the 76ers by making space to re-sign Quentin Grimes and convert Dominick Barlow from a two-way contract to a standard NBA deal.
For Oklahoma City, the team traded Ousmane Dieng and a 2029 second-round draft pick to the Charlotte Hornets. In return, the Thunder received veteran center Mason Plumlee. However, in a separate deal, Dieng ended up joining the Chicago Bulls after a brief stint with the Hornets, according to ESPN.
