Jasmine Guy gave some insightful information about the money she made (and still makes) from A Different World.
The actress herself gave viewers a look into the HBCU experience with her role as Whitley Gilbert on the 90s classic.
The Cosby Show spinoff was about young adults going through life while attending the fictional HBCU, Hillman University. It is a role Guy remains beloved for, but at the time of filming, she wasn’t paid as much as you thought.
Guy is still getting paid from the show
She recently appeared on the Uncensored podcast with Ryan Cameron and discussed her tenure on the show. She told Cameron that she still gets paid from the show, but not much as others would expect, noting that not having an ownership stake in the show affects her residuals.
“We didn’t own it, you know,” she explained, as reported by Atlanta Black Star before adding, “I didn’t have any position to ask for nothing,” she said.
"I was like, 'I’m making $6,000.' I’d never seen that," she said.
The host was shocked.
Guy continued, “When I first got to A Different World, I had a contract, and I got $6,000 a week, and I had a limited contract for seven episodes, me and Kadeem [Hardison]. So when we came on to the show, by episode 6, he was like, ‘What do you think?’ I was like, ‘I don’t know. I didn’t give up my apartment.”
