John Boyega has been tapped by The San Diego Film Festival to receive the Rising Star Award, just a few months before what will likely be one of the biggest moments of his relatively short movie career (when "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" opens in December).
The award will be given on October 1st at La Jolla’s Museum of Contemporary Art during Variety’s Night of Stars. The gala will be hoisted by film critics Jeffrey Lyons and Ben Lyons, featuring a red carpet and reception afterwards.
Boyega will join other honorees at the festival this year, including Adrien Brody (who will be give the Cinema Vanguard Award), Geena Davis (the Reframed Humanitarian Award), Brit Marling (the Auteur Award), and the winner of the Chris Brinker Award, who has yet to be announced.
The San Diego Film Festival will take place from September 30th to October 4th.
Boyega is currently filming the drama/thriller "The Circle," which he co-stars in with Emma Watson and Tom Hanks, and is set for a 2016 release.
