Kanye West's fall down the "Make America Great Again" rabbit hole has cost him longtime fans and celeb friends who once held him in high regard.

But the Chicago rapper may have broken the camel's back when he released private text messages between him and John Legend online. Legend spoke on "Ebro in the Morning" Friday about what he believes makes President Donald Trump appealing to "The Life of Pablo" musician.

“I was shocked when it happened. Then I was like well I’m proud of what I said," he said regarding the texts. "It can’t be that bad. At least I didn’t say anything I didn’t want other people to know that I thought. I felt like I’m not mad that people saw it because at least they know where I’m coming from."

Since Trump's rise to the White House, critics have also noticed that white nationalists and neo-Nazis also rode on the coattails of Trump. Legend believes that Trump's brashness and his lack of empathy for others appealed to Ye. But it should not be forgotten that Trump has emboldened some of the most racists groups in America.

“Kanye when he talks about Trump, I feel like he is thinking about him more as a marketing triumph. Like, I think he sees certain aspects of himself in Trump. He sees how brash he is, and that he doesn’t give a f**k, nobody believes he was going to win, and with a simple message ‘make America great again’ defied all the odds and beat the establishment," the 39-year-old singer said. "I think that’s appealing to Kanye, and I understand why that’s appealing to him, and I understand what’s appealing about it. But politics isn’t just branding and marketing. It’s actual policy and it affects people.”

West's pro-Trump tweets and his association of free thought and love with support for Trump plays into the hands of Trump supporters. And that's what bothers Legend — West doesn't take into account that the Trump administration's policies and supporters are hurting real people.

"It’s not a game. This is people’s real life," the "All of Me" singer explained. "And if you’re operating from love, and you’re operating from empathy, and you’re looking at what this man [Trump] is actually doing, and trying to do… I don’t see how you align yourself with that and say you’re operating yourself from love.”
