Russell Simmons has been busy this year, since signing a two-year first-look deal with HBO, in May.

Since then, he’s put into development, an animated superhero serial based on a comic book from RavenHammer Comics called The Harlem Shadow, created by Brian Williams and Christian Colbert, with Common to voice the title role.

And most recently, he teamed up with director Steve McQueen, for a project at HBO, with World War Z co-writer Matthew Michael Carnahan, and the Oscar-winning producers of The King’s Speech, to develop a drama project that’s been described as “an exploration of a young African American man’s experience entering New York high society, with a past that may not be what it seems.

Today’s news sees Simmons in another collaboration, this time with director John Singleton, on an HBO project called Club Life: Miami – a drama that’s said to be set against the South Beach club scene and follows a reformed criminal who moves to Miami and gains a new lease on life as he embraces the vibrant, youthful and transgressive world.

Singleton will write, and will executive produce the project along with Simmons.

As I type this, I immediately think of the 50 Cent drama currently in development, for the Starz network, which is also set against the club scene, but in New York City, with similar illicit dealins. Omari Hardwick is set to star in the drama series.

This will mark John Singleton’s return to the screen since 2011’s Abduction.
