The Kamala Harris campaign is considering spending election night at Howard University, the presidential candidate’s alma mater. They are eyeing the HBCU as a potential venue for her to speak from, sources told NBC News.
No final decision has been made and other venues are being considered, including the D.C. Convention Center. Harris inherited President Joe Biden’s campaign headquarters in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware when he dropped out of the race.
Harris graduated from Howard University in 1986 and was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
“I have so many fond memories as a student at ‘The Mecca,’ and I recognize that my time at Howard shaped me into the person I am today. At Howard, we learn that we have the capacity to be great and also that we have the responsibility to work hard to live up to that potential each day,” she wrote in an Oct. 19 letter to The Hilltop, Howard’s student news publication.
The Harris campaign is also preparing for potential scenarios that could play out on election day, including getting official results days after Nov. 5. Harris may be giving different speeches at different venues if things play out similarly to the 2020 election.
“Bottom line: We have to be ready for anything,” a source familiar with the Harris campaign told NBC News.
They are also preparing for former President Donald Trump to declare victory before the results are in, as well as legal challenges that may arise as a result. Still, sources noted Harris is unlikely to publicly address that plan as the campaign wants to focus their efforts on getting people out to vote instead.
“People need to go out and vote. You don’t want people thinking about legal challenges,” one Harris aide told the news outlet.
