Authorities have charged three people with capital murder in Mississippi for their alleged roles in the kidnapping, sexual assault, and fatal shooting of 18-year-old Amya Carey.

According to WLBT, Deputy Chief Deric Hearn announced the arrest and detailed the crime at a press briefing Friday afternoon. Dewitt Anderson, 34, Cedric Banks, 37, and Kaymia Blackmon, 19, are suspected of the murder.

Hearn revealed that in Feb., police responded to a scene near Clay Street in reference to a deceased female body. They shot Carey multiple times. However, it wasn’t until last month that the coroner’s office identified the body as Carey.

A family member of Carey’s told detectives that she was picking up a friend, Blackmon, and her boyfriend, Anderson.

According to Hearn, the four people went to several locations that night. And at one point, Blackmon, Anderson, and Anderson’s brother, Banks, all tried to have sex with Carey. Blackmon and Carey allegedly fought after Carey refused. Anderson then reportedly shot Carey. And with the teenager critically injured, they placed her inside a car, and one of them sexually assaulted her.

Detectives contacted Blackmon and Anderson and summoned them to Jackson Police Department headquarters last week. During their interview, Blackmon and Anderson described the events of that night. As a result, all three suspects have been denied bond.

The murdered teen’s friends and family paid tribute to her on social media; two Facebook users revealed that her family laid her to rest over the weekend.

The three suspects’ court date has yet to be released to the public. We will keep you updated as the story develops.
