Kim Burrell is still dealing with the backlash from her contentious sermon that went viral in 2017. She’s lost deals, endorsements and even friendships over the homophobic statements she made at the Houston Love & Liberty Fellowship Church. Although the other losses may have affected her wallet, Burrell claims the biggest loss could have been her life.

In the sermon that first went viral on Facebook, Burrell preached to church attendees, that “perverted homosexual spirit, and the spirit of delusion and confusion, it has deceived many men and women.”

She went on to say, “It has come into our church and it has embarrassed the kingdom of God.”

The viral clip also captured Burrell preaching to the congregation, “You as a man, you open your mouth and take a man’s penis in your face, you are perverted. You are a woman and will shake your face in another woman’s breast, you are perverted.”

Burrell made Blavity headlines when her planned appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show was canceled. She was set to perform a song from the Hidden Figures soundtrack with Pharrell Wiliams, but her statements in the 2017 sermon opposed the views of DeGeneres’s proud advocacy of the LBGTQ+ community.

Although the situation just seemed like another consequence of Burrell’s actions, she claims the aftermath was unjust.

Recently, the gospel singer-minister was a guest on the We Sound Crazy podcast and talked about the controversy that has tarnished her career. Burrell revealed some previously unknown details about the fallout, including her being shot at.

After confirming on the podcast interview that she was supposed to appear on DeGeneres’s show, one of the hosts asked Burrell if she felt her removal was mishandled.

She quickly agreed, saying, ”Oh sure, sure. There was a whole lot that could have been done differently.”

“The cancel culture thing increased right about then, I hadn’t heard of it before … I was chosen to be put in that position … I know God had a divine purpose for me … But I have not shared that I was shot at.”

She recalled the extent of how much protection she needed.

“I had helicopters flying over my home. I had constables and sheriffs living outside my house for seven days.”

She also mentioned her long-time friend Stevie Wonder expressed his concern and brought her airline tickets to escape the firestorm.

Burrell admitted that even after five years, she is still being harassed and threatened over the situation.

“It’s still going on. I still get death threats … after five years, six years, people still call and give hate mail … It is still happening heavily.”
