Andrew Bachelor, mostly known by his online alias King Bach, took the internet by storm in recent years for his hilarious videos, propelling him into instant success.
But while many may know King Bach from his videos, few know of the interpersonal parts of his journey that earned the internet-sensation-turned-comedian the recognition of having the largest following on Vine. Blavity sat down with Bach in the latest episode of our series "Life After Going Viral" to hear from Bach himself on how he went "viral for making viral videos" and catapulted himself to stardom.
Bach began by recalling the early parts of his journey and his move to Los Angeles, California. He briefly attended New York Film Academy to pursue his masters, but said he eventually dropped out for one particular reason.
"I dropped out to pursue my dreams," he told Blavity.
His passion for filmmaking led him to venture into the world of YouTube in 2010 where he acted and directed his own videos, garnering a significant following. Then at the beginning of Vine's popularity in 2013, Bach said he began making selfie videos portraying people he often observed.
"Most of the situations, most of the characters I play, are people from my life or people that I've seen," he said.
After finetuning his editing, directing and shooting skills and testing with various forms of video content, Bach said he started to see his following increase significantly.
"It would go from me getting 100 followers a day when I first started," he said. "Eventually, I was getting 50,000 followers a day to 60,000 followers a day. I was the fastest growing person on Vine. I went from 3,000 followers to 1 million followers in less than a month."
Although Bach has become an instant entertainment sensation on the internet, he said there's certainly a formula to creating content that resonates with the vast majority.
"It became like a science to me," he said. "I figured out which jokes and which situations people like the best."
"The key to it is you have to be one with the people. It's the whole relatability thing of it. It's not the easiest thing to do, but it's like basketball. The more jump shots you take, the better you get," he explained.
Despite his rising success on the internet, King Bach said he's looking to expand his portfolio and has a goal of becoming "the biggest movie star in the world."
After reaching 3 million followers on Vine, he received his first acting gig on the comedy series House of Lies co-starring along Don Cheadle.
"The way I see it is you set goals and you'll never be happy with the goal that you achieve," he said, speaking of his next business ventures. "When you reach a goal, you're gonna set a new goal — so that's how I keep my drive and keep working."
Bach has already made progress on his goals by recently published his first comedy music visual album, Medicine. The album, which is available on all streaming platforms, became the number one comedy album in the world — solidifying the fact that Bach has proven to be an unstoppable creative force.
