Sculptor Dan Medina erected a 160-pound bronze statue at the site of the crash where Kobe Bryant and his 13-year old daughter Gianna Bryant died. The father and daughter are seen wearing basketball uniforms, gazing lovingly at one another, with Bryant's hand on Gianna's shoulder as she holds a basketball.
The names of the other victims who died in the crash are engraved on a plaque at the base of the statue. Ara Zobayan; John Altobelli, his wife, Keri Altobelli, and their daughter Alyssa Altobelli; Christina Mauser; and Sarah Chester and her daughter Payton Chester also died in the crash. Alyssa and Payton were Gianna's teammates.
The plaque also includes the quote, "Heroes come and go, but legends are forever."
On Jan. 26, 2020, Bryant and his daughter and the seven other passengers were flying in a helicopter when it crashed in Calabasas, California, ABC 7 reports.
Medina met fans who traveled to see the statue.
Medina was present to greet fans who traveled to the spot to pay their respects to the deceased basketball legend.
"This is all on my own, no one asked me to do it," Medina said.
"On this day, the second anniversary of the accident, I decided to bring it up from sunrise to sunset and create a bit of a healing process for fans," he added, according to NBC News.
Medina removed the touching piece on Wednesday at sunset, but he hopes the city will consider hosting a larger 7-foot version of the sculpture in downtown Los Angeles, Fox 13 reports.
