Rumor has it that the Los Angeles Lakers are making final arrangements for a Kobe Bryant memorial statue that’s set to make its debut next summer.

As Bossip reports, The Los Angeles Lakers team is looking to honor Bryant on Aug. 8, 2024.

It would be an ode to the two jersey numbers — 8 and 24 — he wore during the duration of his basketball career, according to The Daily Mail. The event is set to take place outside the Cryto.com Arena.

This was one of the first details shared publicly since Lakers owner Jeanie Buss reconfirmed there were plans for a statue to pay homage to Bryant in a 2022 interview with NBA.com’s Mark Medina.

“Those are all things we are discussing internally. Rest assured, we haven’t forgotten anything, but it has to be done the right way and at the right time,” she said at the time.

Despite an artist not being chosen to construct the artwork yet, The Daily Mail reported that the five-time NBA Champion’s widow Vanessa Bryant has been a part of the process, especially since there will be an additional component unlike any other. A source told the publication that the memorial will also incorporate daughter Gigi Bryant, who had her eyes set on the WNBA and passed away with her father, along with six other victims, in the tragic helicopter accident on Jan. 26, 2020.

Other great Lakers players, including Magic Johnson, Jerry West, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Elgin Baylor and Shaquille O’Neal, as well as respected LA broadcaster Chick Hearn, have statues around the Cryto.com Arena.
