Today, FOX Baltimore reports, after nearly three hours of deliberation, a Baltimore jury awarded the family of Korryn Gaines more than $37 million dollars for her wrongful death.

In August 2016, Korryn Gaines was shot and killed by a Baltimore police officer executing an arrest warrant in connection with a traffic violation. Gaines' 5-year-old son, Kodi Gaines, was also shot and injured during the incident. Her family later filed a $4 million wrongful death lawsuit against the police and Baltimore County.

Today the jury found that the Baltimore officer's first shot was fired without proper cause.

“This is a great day. This is a great statement on behalf of many who have been victimized by police officers — too many — in our community,” Ravenell said, according to the Baltimore Sun.

Gaines' mother spoke outside courthouse:  "This win is for all of my sisters in the movement who have lost their children to police violence. Some of them have never received justice, either criminally or civil. I just want to tell them that this win is for them.”

Baltimore County released a statement noting they were "disappointed" in the jury's decision.

"A mother died, a child was unintentionally injured, and police officers were placed in mortal danger. By any account, this was a tragic situation," said county attorney Mike Field. "The County is disappointed with the verdict and is reviewing all of its options, including an appeal."
